For a personal FBI record review, the submission route controls the location
Start the direct request first
The FBI FAQ lists an $18 fee for an Identity History Summary requested directly from the FBI. After completing the electronic request, participating U.S. Post Offices can take fingerprints electronically; the Post Office can charge an additional fingerprinting fee.
A fingerprint card can also be mailed
The FBI also accepts a completed fingerprint card with a mailed request. Local, county or state law-enforcement agencies may provide fingerprinting for a fee, so a nearby police or sheriff location is useful only if it offers the required card service.
Keep the destination tied to the request
A nearby fingerprint appointment is a collection step, not the final record source. The fingerprint submission still has to reach the FBI through the direct route or another authorized route.
An FBI-approved Channeler is a different nearby-service path
Use the FBI list, not a generic storefront list
The FBI-approved Channeler list identifies companies authorized to receive fingerprints and identifying data for Departmental Order submissions, transmit them to CJIS and return the individual’s result. The FBI page was updated May 27, 2026. A Channeler can add its own service charge, so check both authorization and total price before booking.
Employment, licensing and adoption checks need the requesting program’s route
The FBI request-purpose guidance says a personal Identity History Summary is provided for personal review or correction and is not the product to use for employment, licensing or adoption in the United States. Those uses may require a state identification bureau, a requesting federal agency or another authorized channeling process.
Ask the organization that will receive the result for its exact instructions before paying a nearby provider. If it gives an ORI, service code, account number, approved vendor list or fingerprint format, that requirement is more important than distance.
